SUMMARY:LMC Lifelong Learning Center Lecture - Maritime Contra Costa County
DESCRIPTION:The Los Medanos College Lifelong Learning Adult Lectures are fee-based\, not-for-credit classes on specialized topics that are designed for personal growth and enrichment for attendees. Lectures are taught by individuals who are experts in their field and passionate about the topics they are addressing. \nThe Lifelong Learning Center is holding a series of monthly lectures on the history of the Delta. Join Carol Jensen\, local historian\, on Tuesday\, November 15 from 1 PM to 3 PM as she talks about the maritime history of Contra Costa County. \nSan Francisco’s “opposite shore” is exceptional for its maritime role in securing the City’s financial preeminence. Located minutes from San Francisco by ferry or automobile\, Contra Costa County provided deep water ports for shipping agricultural\, mineral\, and manufactured goods around the world. Pacific commodity traders made use of these ports to ship products\, ensuring California’s unique global economic role. Immense wealth is created from goods shipped from maritime Contra Costa County\, securing a vibrant economy from the Gaslight era to the days of Haight-Ashbury. We experience in vintage photographs this region’s impact on significant California events. Wines to challenge French vinicultural supremacy were shipped\, grains destined to make Guinness beer great set sail\, and soldiers embarked for the World War II Pacific Theatre from these piers. Maritime Contra Costa provides a fresh perspective on the intertwined histories of San Francisco and its “other coast.”

SUMMARY:LMC Lifelong Learning Center Lecture - Oakley Through Time
DESCRIPTION:The Los Medanos College Lifelong Learning Adult Lectures are fee-based\, not-for-credit classes on specialized topics that are designed for personal growth and enrichment for attendees. Lectures are taught by individuals who are experts in their field and passionate about the topics they are addressing. \nThe Lifelong Learning Center is holding a series of monthly lectures on the history of the Delta. Join Carol Jensen\, local historian\, on Tuesday\, December 13 from 1 PM to 3 PM as she talks about Oakley history through time. \nThe settlement and development of Oakley is the story of a thriving California pioneer town. Nestled in California’s San Joaquin Delta\, the area quickly became San Francisco’s easternmost frontier for land speculation\, agricultural production and immigration. By 1900\, land speculators enticed Portuguese\, Spanish and Italian immigrants to settle in Oakley and establish their families. Located away from the deep water of San Francisco Bay\, Oakley became a railroad town along the Santa Fe line. Here the stories of immigration and community development played out as they have in small towns throughout the West. Twentieth-century wars\, food production and changing transportation methods reshaped the tight-knit community over the years.

SUMMARY:LMC Lifelong Learning Center Lecture - Local History as Experienced through Real Photo Postcards
Join Carol Jensen\, local historian\, on Tuesday\, January 17 from 1 PM to 3 PM as she talks about local history as experience through real photo postcards. \nFrom about 1890 until the First World War\, traveling photographers would roam the country snapping shots of families\, homes and farmland. Real photos are printed on postcard stock\, purchased in bulk and sent to families in Europe by those wishing to display their prosperity in the New World. Real photo postcards are a wonderful cultural archive items that capture the times and show what life was like back then. For example\, a postcard sent to a Mrs. Smith in San Francisco reads\, “Hello Girlie – How are you? and yours? So terribly warm here today am almost roasted. Had a dandy time at Frank Eaton and Ruby Hudson Eaton’s’ reception. I suppose you heard that they were married?” It is a completely new research opportunity engaging in real photo postcard (“RPP”) history. It allows individuals to learn about their community\, helps others to remember the area and remind new residents of the reasons they moved out here.
