DESCRIPTION:Join the Sacramento River Delta Historical Society program in an overview of railroad dining cars spans the years from 1868 to 1971 (when Amtrak took over most passenger car dining car service). Marilyn Sommerdorf\, railroad historian and speaker for the night\, will give a fascinating look at the history of railroad dining\, from its humble beginnings to the celebrated dining cars of America’s great passenger trains. She has produced and presented many railroad programs over the years. \nThe dining car service\, crew and support staff who worked supplying the train dining service were at the root of the memorable passenger experience. Stories still linger about these traveling restaurants. The onboard atmosphere was famous for treating passengers to a pleasant ride. Most of all the food compared favorable to famous restaurants of the time. Preparation and cooking was astounding as the cooks and chefs created full course meals while the train sped toward adventure. Various specialties and recipes became signatures advertised by some railroads. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate National Public Lands Day by helping restore the Preserve’s waterways! Join Preserve staff for a unique\, hands-on volunteer event where canoes will be used to remove invasive aquatic plants from around the recreation facilities\, including the public dock and nearby waterways. \n \nVolunteers will paddle through these areas to identify and remove invasive plant species that can impact water quality\, crowd out native vegetation\, and reduce habitat for wildlife. This important restoration work helps keep the waterways healthy while also improving access and enjoyment for visitors who use the Preserve’s recreational facilities. \nNo previous paddling or restoration experience is necessary. Preserve staff will provide canoes\, paddles\, life jackets\, and all the tools needed for the project\, along with instructions on paddling safely and removing invasive plants. \nPlease wear clothes and closed-toe shoes that can get wet or muddy\, bring plenty of water and sun protection\, and be prepared for light to moderate physical activity.
