Parks
“The (Delta) glowed in the living light like a sunset sky – one sheet of purple and gold,
with the bright Sacramento pouring through the midst of it from the north, the San Joaquin
from the south, and their many tributaries sweeping in at right angles from the mountains,
dividing the plain into sections fringed with trees.” John Muir
Created over thousands upon thousands of years, the Delta is a meandering set of waterways, both natural and man-made as humans attempted to tame the mighty waters created from the massive snow melt of the Sierra Nevada. A low-lying area, the Delta region is home to more than 750 animal and plant species, including the endangered Delta smelt, once the most abundant fish in the area.
There are many ways to explore the Delta region — you can walk, bike, hike, kayak, boat, and paddle your own canoe! Many of the regional parks offer educational tours and interactive classes. Visit a nature area created by a massive levee break, photograph one of the more than 2,000 species of bird that migrate through the Delta, or hike through native riparian forests, meadows filled with wildlife, and along scenic, rambling river trails.
Most of all, visit the Delta and enjoy the great outdoors! Here are some of the parks to go visit – may we also recommend these picnic spots!
